I first came across Hellmouth less than year ago. When I found out that the band featured ex-Suicide Machines vocalist Jason Navarro, I knew I had to check them out. Naturally, I wasn’t disappointed. They pretty much sound like what you’d think a band with the name Hellmouth would sound like. Pissed, loud, fast, raw, and god-hating; I loved it. Their debut LP “Destroy Everything, Worship Nothing” is awesome, not only for its title, but for its violent sound.

So, about two months ago, I learned that Hellmouth would be releasing a new record. I also read that they planned to burn a bible and press its ashes into a record. I was definitely intrigued. The concept seemed pretty cool and it sounded perfect for a band of their nature, so I figured I’d try to get one. Then, not long before pre-orders went up, I found out that only 33 of these bible ash LPs would be pressed. OK, now I definitely need one of these. When you start throwing around words like “limited” and “exlusive,” and pressing numbers less than 100, I get excited. To me, it’s pretty cool knowing that I’m just one of very few who owns a specific copy of a record. Anyways, there was no doubt that these things would sell out pretty fast, and they did in less than an hour I think. I’ll also mention quickly that pre-orders were slightly delayed, which was driving me a little crazy, but Paper + Plastick kept me updated on twitter as to when the pre-orders would launch. Pretty cool of them!

Sure, it looks cool, but does it play? I’ll be honest, when I ordered this, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I definitely didn’t think I’d have any issues playing it. Well, I’ve read some people have had no problems (other than sound quality) while playing it, while others (like myself), don’t really ever intend to play it. There are some spots in the record where the ash is actually coming through the vinyl, so it seems like I’d get ashes everywhere if I did decide to spin it. I’m not really upset though, I think the novelty and the exclusivity of the record alone makes it worth owning. Also, I have two other perfectly playable copies of this record (since I think I need every variant). I do wish the other two colors were a little more interesting than solid orange and white, but the bible ash makes up for it.

One of the things I love most about LPs is the large artwork. To me, the artwork and packaging is a pretty important aspect and it’s something that CDs and especially MP3s (or iTunes LP) can never match. So, I was really excited when I saw the artwork and packaging for this record. The cover art alone is pretty sweet, but the gatefold jacket has a really cool insert photo. Also, there’s a booklet, which is huge and has some nice illustrations and photograpy. I always prefer a booklet to a single page insert (and especially to no insert at all).

And one last thing, I always love when someone takes the time to write a personal note with my order!
